This position begins August, 2018. 

South Mountain Community College (SMCC) is hiring a Communication Residential Faculty to teach classes in Communication in accordance with the philosophy and mission of the college ( http://www.southmountaincc.edu/about-us/visionmissionvalues/ ) using traditional and nontraditional methods of instruction. This position provides instruction and conducts classes for a diverse population of students in Communication in content areas including Human Communication, Interpersonal Communication, Public Speaking, and Intercultural Communication. 

Essential Functions 

50% - Instructs a diverse population in Communication courses including Human Communication, Interpersonal Communication, Public Speaking, and Intercultural Communication. Through traditional, hybrid, online teaching and other nontraditional teaching methods; prepares and grades exams. 

15% - Performs teaching preparation including creating, implementing and maintaining course materials for assigned courses 

15% - Participates in campus and District committees and/or meetings 

10% - Maintains office hours to assist students and perform student advising through mentoring students majoring in Communication 

10% - Participates in activities related to Division and/or Program activities; works with other faculty in the development of the College Communication program; maintains currency in university articulation and transfer processes; demonstrates commitment to student success; performs other related duties as assigned 

Minimum Qualifications 

The Academic Teaching Fields require the following from an accredited college or university: 

  • a master's degree in the teaching field, OR a master's in any teaching field with 18 graduate semester hours in the teaching field
  • EDU 250 - Teaching and Learning in the Community College -- or equivalent must be completed within two years of date of hire


  • Desired Qualifications 

  • Doctorate in Communication from an accredited university.
  • At least three (3) or more years of full-time teaching experience with community college students, or at least 5 years part-time teaching with higher education students.
  • Experience teaching Introduction to Human Communication, Interpersonal Communication, Public Speaking, and Inter-cultural Communication.
  • Experience developing instructional materials and teach in traditional classroom, hybrid and online modalities.
  • Experience with teaching techniques that effectively address the learning needs of students from a variety of cultural, educational and socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • Experience with applications of Communication and community involvement (e.g., service-learning, Toastmasters, etc.)
  • Experience innovating and/or collaborating with colleagues or community members on projects that enhance visibility and quality of the Communication Department.


  • Special Working Conditions 

  • May be required to work at off-campus locations and teach evenings and/or weekend classes.
  • May require local travel.
  • May be required to lift objects up to 25 lbs .

    MCCCD accepts unofficial transcripts for U.S. schools at the time of application. Unofficial transcripts are submitted as an attachment to the application. Transcripts from non U.S. institutions must be translated/evaluated and provided with application material.
